HireMyMom Success Story: Amanda Smith

Tell us a little about you and your experience on HireMyMom.

My background and degree are in sales and marketing. When I had my children I chose to come home to be with them. When my 2nd child was entering pre-school I missed working in the marketing field so I began searching for ways I could work from home. I stumbled upon HireMyMom.com in 2014. I noticed at this time that the trend for marketing was leaving traditional advertising methods and becoming more for social media. I started learning everything I could about social media advertising and established my own consulting business. In 2015, I turned to HireMyMom.com to look for clients and landed a job with a small company located across the USA. I kept this account for over a year before they chose to use different advertising methods. After my success, I told a friend about HireMyMom.com and she ended up landing a part-time job as well that after a year turned into a full-time managerial position. Last year I got the idea to start a blog to help women find ways to work from home and share my experience. You can read more at www.livingthatwahmlife.com.

What did you do previously?

I was an Advertising Sales Representative for 8 years prior to coming home with my children.

What is your top tip for landing a gig on HireMyMom.com?

My greatest recommendation is to have a stellar resume and cover letter that sells yourself. Believe in your abilities and make them believe in you too.

What’s your favorite thing about HireMyMom.com?

My favorite part about HireyMyMom.com is the job postings are legit and there are no scams to worry about. Most of the employers know they are hiring moms and understand they will be working around a flexible schedule.

What’s one fun or interesting fact about you?

I love to travel and have studied abroad in England. I have visited probably half of the USA but have more places on my bucket list. My dream job would be to be a travel blogger once my children become adults.

Tell us a little about your business and why you started it.

I started as a Virtual Assistant two years ago. I was a teacher for six years and the opportunity for entrepreneurship presented itself, and I took it and ran with it. Now I offer consulting and advising services for online business owners. I essentially help visionaries and CEOs manage their magic with systems and hiring so they can have a greater impact and scale.

What is your top advice for entrepreneurs / small business owners?

Remember that you can do hard things!

HireMyMom Success Story: Monique Muro

Business: Proof Mango / Los Angeles, CA

Tell us a little about your business and why you started it.

I help online course creators edit their online course-related content (from lesson copy to marketing material), and make sure their online course works (I take care of the tech headaches). I originally started out copy editing and proofreading everything under the sun for online business owners. Then one day, a client gave me his online course to proofread, and I LOVED it. I decided then and there that editing online course content would be a niche service I could provide to the millions of online course creators out there profiting from their knowledge and passion.

What is your top advice for entrepreneurs / small business owners?

Never, ever, ever give up. You’ll go weeks without anything good happening in your business, despite working yourself to the bone – and then one day, something magical will happen. Someone will book a call or DM you about your service. The hard work starts paying off in little wood chips and flakes – meaning, it feels like you’re hammering away at something for so long and FINALLY you make a dent and stuff starts flying everywhere. But only because you didn’t give up. That’s my best advice for anyone growing a business – keep chipping away!

What is your top tip for working with a virtual team?

Take your time hiring. I got a ton of wonderful, qualified virtual assistants in my inbox after putting out a job post on Hire My Mom, but I took my time hiring and put them all through a vetting process that worked out wonderfully. First, I starred the candidates that seemed the most qualified. Next, I reached out to the ones I starred and asked them to complete a personalities test + a short survey. From there, I interviewed the ones I liked the most, and I found a great virtual assistant who is perfect for what Proof Mango needs at the moment.

What’s your favorite thing about HireMyMom.com?

Oh my goodness, what’s not to love? I started out on Hire My Mom in early 2017 to pick up some contract proofreading/copy editing gigs. I ended up working with extraordinary online business owners who taught me to so much and gave me such great work experience. I’d say my favorite thing at the moment is that when you apply for these gigs, you’re not lumped in with hundreds of other applicants – the applicant pool is just small enough for you to stand out. As a business owner, my favorite thing about Hire My Mom is being able to hire such talented people working remotely from all over the country. The service really attracts great people!

What’s one fun or interesting fact about you?

I am a total online course junkie. I am obsessed with buying online courses on editing and digital marketing – those are probably my two favorite subjects. I can’t get enough, and I am guilty of buying new courses before I’ve finished (or started!) the ones I’ve got! I just love having a ton of information in my arsenal as a business owner.

Hire My Mom Employer Success Story: Doug Holbrook

Name: Doug Holbrook
Business: iVention
City / State: Louisville, KY
Website: ivention.us

Tell us a little about your business and how you got started.

A 3-year-old named Rowan and a newborn named Aspen captured my heart and made working for non-flexible, non-caring, family-hostile business very difficult.  My wife and I decided to set out on our own using my expertise in Laboratory Informatics software.

What advice do you have for entrepreneurs and home business owners?

Take a deep breath, and keep walking through the hard parts. Each struggle gives way slowly to success. It takes so much longer than you can anticipate to build and profit from a business. We thought we would be profitable by 6 months, 3 years later we are getting much closer.

What is your top tip for hiring great talent?

Hire for personal drive and willingness more than existing experience and education.

What’s your favorite thing about HireMyMom.com?

We offer very flexible work environment and hours, many of us attend meetings with babies on our laps or screaming just off-screen.  We find great talented people who are looking for a job that blend and melds with family, kids, & friends and the chaos that comes from living an interesting life. HireMyMom.com has been instrumental in our success thus far.

What’s one fun fact about you?

I am an avid landscaper and speak German.

What’s your success story with HireMyMom.com?
I was referred to HireMyMom.com from a church friend. At the time I was unable to work due to lack of childcare. I joined in January of that year and was employed by the end of February. Again the following year after a move, I joined HireMyMom.com again. For the past 1 1/2 years have worked for an amazing company owned by another amazing mom. Together in 6 short months we grew the company by leaps and bounds. Just this fall I found my THIRD job with this amazing website. I have referred HireMyMom.com countless times. It has been a HUGE blessing to me and afforded me the opportunity to spend this invaluable time with my son.

What’s your educational and experiential background?

Only 1.5 years left until graduation and certification to become a RAD tech. I have over 20 years in customer service, an additional 10 in administrative.

What is your top tip for landing a gig on HireMyMom.com?

Know what you can do and can’t do. Know the worth of your skill set, but be realistic as to your availability and your commitment to your follow-through on a position you accept. Professionalism is key.

What’s your favorite thing about HireMyMom.com?

Most importantly is the quality of the job postings. I am a professional woman looking for good work at good pay. I’m a woman who can’t make it on the bare minimum. Employers here are serious, driven, and are looking for candidates who match their passion.

What’s one fun fact about you?

I’m a huge kid, with a love for Jesus and gardening.

What’s your success story with HireMyMom.com?

I am a bit of a rare situation, I was at a full time job when I got pregnant and wanted to stay home with my son so I became a member of Hiremymom.com in May/June of 2015 and it only took me about a week or two to land my first interview and was hired on at the company that I still work for today (going on 2.5 years) in August of that same year.

What’s your educational and experiential background?

I have my bachelors in Corporate Communication and have about 1 years worth of experience in a non-profit organization and 2.5 years of experience if business development, web organization, ghostwriting, transcription, and other various virtual assistant tasks.

What is your top tip (or tips) for landing a gig on HireMyMom.com?

Be open to anything, even time zones. I work on pacific coast time, but live in central. If you are willing to put in the work and be flexible then you should more often than not find exactly what you are looking for.

What’s your favorite thing about HireMyMom.com?

I love to read when my husband takes over toddler time 🙂

Hire My Mom Success Story: Shannon Culp

What’s your success story with HireMyMom.com?

I cannot stop shouting HireMyMom.com from the rooftops! I’ve enjoyed introducing it to so many moms out there looking for exactly what I found through hiremymom…my DREAM JOB. It’s hard for people to believe there’s a site out there focused on helping moms. When in fact,  the companies who advertise jobs here have a strong understanding of what career moms like myself are looking for. I wanted to find inner peace and perfect work/life balance that allows me to put my family first and not lose sight of my career goals.

I joined the website and actually got two awesome jobs in the span of 6 months!

For me, my career aspirations included finding the “diamond in the rough” position I just knew was out there. I wanted something I could be passionate about and proud of. I found BestSelf.Co’s posting for a Project Manager and instantly fell in love with this company and everything it stands for. Their post told me I could work 100% remotely, have fun at my job, and be a part of something truly amazing?!? Was this company for real? So, I checked out the website and learned all about Cathryn and Allen. They created an insanely successful business out of a need for organization and accountability. Not only was I going to focus 100% of my efforts towards landing this DREAM JOB with a company that was clearly cooler than I was, I found myself actually wanting to buy and try the products!

I got the job with BestSelf.Co. around the middle of September and less than a month later I joined my new team in Key West for my first (of hopefully many) bi-annual team retreats!

HireMyMom.com fatefully connected me with a company and a job I didn’t even know existed! Never in my life have I truly gotten to tell people about what I do with such amazing passion and pride. I have so much gratitude and thanks towards HireMyMom.com. What a perfect season it is to reflect on that!

What’s your educational and experiential background?

My education is in Business Management & Accounting, and up until very recently the majority of my work experience was in Property Management.

What is your top tip for landing a gig on HireMyMom.com?

  • Set your career search goals high and thoroughly read each career posting that intrigues you.
  • Take the time to learn what they are looking for and promote yourself in a unique way that will make you memorable over hundreds if not thousands of other applicants:
  • Tell a short, yet intriguing story about yourself.
  • Find a way to relate reading and/or education that you’ve completed in a way that will make you shine in that position.
  • Bottom line, in your cover letter, don’t repeat your resume. Find a new and interesting way to tell your prospective employer about yourself.
  • Take care in every. single. application you submit. Don’t phone this in. If you expect to land an amazing job – you have to put amazing effort towards achieving it.
  • Don’t copy/paste for multiple positions. Research each company and reflect on that in your application.
  • Many of the jobs on HireMyMom are with aspiring startup companies who embrace the “work productively from home” mantra. If you want to be part of something amazing from the ground up, HireMyMom.com is an awesome place to find that!

HireMyMom Employer Success Story: Zachary Sexton

Tell us a little about your business and how you got started.

I teach digital productivity to business owners. I got started by fixing my own productivity issues. That lead me to working with small business owners who had the similar struggles with focus and organization.

What advice do you have for entrepreneurs and home business owners?

Carve out time every week to think, plan, organize and review your work. Put it on your calendar. Taking 1 to 2 hours a week to do this may seem like a waste of time, but the:
  • planning- will save you from going down unproductive rabbit holes and get you off the hamster wheel of reacting to one emergency after the next
  • organizing – will allow you to work faster during the week and prevent redoing work you’ve already done
  • reviewing- will give you the opportunity to see what type of work that gave you the best results with the least effort. This information will give you a better idea of the types of projects and clients to engage with. It will also let you know what work should be automated or delegated (to a productive mom of course ;-).

When should one consider outsourcing or hiring additional help?

As soon as possible. The more time you can spend working in your zone of genius, the more value you will produce and the better you will feel. The only way to spend time doing the things you are great at is to have people help you with the areas outside of your sweet spot.

What is your top tip for hiring great talent?

Be annoyingly specific about how you want people to reach out to you about the position. If they can’t follow specific written instructions when applying, that’s not likely to change after hiring.

What’s your favorite thing about HireMyMom.com?

The talent! I was blown away by the quality of the candidates I received from my job posting.

What’s your success story with HireMyMom?

Hire My Mom has been a wonderful tool for me to find clients over the years.  I have been an active member off and for more than 6 years.  Every client I have found on this site has been wonderful to work with and flexible with my schedule. Whenever my business is in a lull, HireMyMom is the first place I go to find new clients.

What’s your educational and experiential background?

I have a degree in communications.  I have been a business owner since 2004.  I have owned a mortgage company, a video rental company, a wholesale distribution company, a branding and packaging company as well as my online business services company.  I have recently started a coaching certification program to enable me to grow my virtual company by including business coaching, masterminds and webinars to teach entrepreneurs business basics.  I work primarily with coaches who want to grow their businesses. I also enjoy writing articles and blogs.

What is your top tip for landing a gig on HireMyMom?

Take your time to answer the questions the potential employer is looking for.  Also add a cover letter and follow their instructions for applying. Many small business owners will use a sequence of directions to see who can pay attention to detail and follow directions, if you don’t follow their directions you’ll be disregarded before you even have the chance to sell yourself.

What’s your favorite thing about HireMyMom?

The ease of use on their website.

What’s one fun fact about you?

I’m a competitive ballroom dancer.
